ABEL TASMAN WALK

Abel Tasman Walk Things To Know.

1) No bikes or dogs are allowed on the track.

2) All overnight stays must be booked with the Department of Conservation.

3) The Abel Tasman does not get reliable phone coverage. We recommend a Personal Location Device  / Beacon . Hire for $70

4) There is limited water to drink so you need to boil or filter drinking water. We have filters available.

6) Take warm waterproof clothing. Yes it gets hot but when it rains it can rain hard.

7) Take plastic bags to put wet clothes into.

8) Sleeping at the cabins must be booked and beds are first come first served.

9) There is little to no food to buy on the Abel Tasman Walk if at all. Take extra food. If you are in the Abel Tasman for 3 days take 5 days of food. Motueka has large supermarkets.

10) Tell someone that you trust when you are starting the walk and let them know when you are finished.

11) Take a first aide kit and mozzie repellent.

12 ) You need good quality shoes or boots. We recommend that you have shoes / boots that are already worn in. Dont buy brand new boots for the walk.

13) Take a hat for sun protection and sun lotion. New Zealand's sun is high in UV.

14) Ask people for help or information if you need it. New Zealanders are keen to help you.

15) Take a good backpack and sleeping bag. A good back pack will make the walk so much nicer and a good quality sleeping will let you sleep better. Dont use a school bag. It will probably break with the extra weight.

16) Take a torch and spare batteries. Some toilets are away from the cabins. No you cant go anywhere. There are designated toilet areas. Some long drops and some flushing.

17) You will need anti bacterial spray or gel. Use it before eating meals and after toilet use. There is nothing worse than getting sick away from help.

18) Look out for other people on the trail. Some are slow some walk fast so if you are slow let faster people past you. Its not a race.

19) Lock your food away in you backpack or plastic containers. Weka (birds) will try to take it. Its not funny running out of food.

20) Enjoy the Great Walk. You may never come this way again so savor the time..

21) You will want a good nights sleep before and after your trek. Accommodation starts from $100 per person per night. We can help you with that if needed.
